The Artist...

JEF BRETSCHNEIDER is a New York based contemporary artist, known for his participation in the 1970's & 80's East Village Art Scene
Recently, Bretschneider was included in the 2017-2018 CLUB 57 RETROSPECTIVE at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
The Work...
Jef took a stretched painting, ripped off
the canvas, and re-stretched it with mesh.
The mesh is open weave, transparent, it acts and behaves like canvas.

Look not at them...Look into them
Jef floats the stretched mesh atop a blank canvas board. He alternates painting the two surfaces (working them back and forth) until two diametrical paintings become one.

"In an Art-world where style and branding is the engine of commerce, Jef Bretschneider's work is deft and competative."

Jef calls this mesh layer a "canvas simulation"
or a "virtual canvas"
